Electric vehicle (EV) owners have expressed their outrage at the lack of charging points across the country after drivers waited for over three hours to get back on the road over the Christmas holidays.
As we enter 2023 and head further towards the deadline for the ban of sales of new petrol/diesel cars, It has been clear that our country is far from having the right infrastructure to support an EV-based future.
How do the numbers compare?
Electric cars have just passed in sales compared to diesel cars for the first time in the last year. Out of all the new cars sold. 20% were electric and 18% were diesel. Although this is promising news, the increase in charging stations does not come anywhere near the number of new EVs on the road.
In the UK there are currently 6900 rapid charging stations for electric cars, however, there are currently over 666000 fully electric vehicles registered in the country, With the sales greatly increasing every year.
As charging stations only have 5-10 spaces on average, there has been a drastic increase in wait times for EV owners. This is still due to the fact that not everyone has their own charger installed at home. As well as this, the rising cost of electricity and the cost of living crisis has not helped this problem.
