Can premium save you pennies?
With the ongoing cost of living crisis, the majority of drivers will choose to fill their cars with the cheapest petrol currently available to save money. But how does it affect your vehicle and are you actually saving money in the long run?
What are the differences?
Price
Probably the biggest factor that makes people choose non-premium petrol is the price. At the moment standard petrol on average is 144-149p per Litre whilst premium petrol is 154-165p.
Brands
Did you know that not all standard petrol is equal, meaning that the quality of standard fuel from supermarkets is not the same quality as other brands. Studies show that standard petrol from supermarkets can be of a lower quality, hence the cheaper prices.
Performance
Depending on your car, different fuel types can actually make a big difference to the performance. Generally, cars with bigger engines and higher performance benefit more greatly from premium fuels as the petrol burns more efficiently and lets the engine run at its maximum power, whereas the same car can perform noticeably more sluggish with cheaper petrol, but that’s not too say that standard cars don’t benefit, as they can still run more smoothly with higher quality fuel.
Efficiency
Something that a lot of people are unaware of is that premium fuels can actually last longer than regular fuel. This is because the car can gain a significant increase in miles per gallon (MPG). Where you might spend more money initially by using premium fuels, you might actually notice that in the long run, you go to the petrol station less, spending less money overall. Another great benefit is the additives put in the premium fuels are more healthy for the engine and can actually increase the lifespan of the car.
