Electric vehicle drivers could be taxed to make up for fuel loss
A new report from The Centre of Policy Studies has revealed that drivers in the UK should be taxed by the mile when behind the wheel once electric vehicles (EVs) become the most popular car of choice.
What’s the purpose?
This would be implemented so the Government can cover the £25 billion loss that they would suffer from a loss in fuel duty once all cars go fully electric. During the meetings with Government officials, It was suggested that a pay-as-you-drive charge system would be the best way to tackle this future problem, however, any new tax system would be controversial so other suggestions are still being discussed
As time goes on, drivers are realizing that electric cars are actually a lot more expensive than they originally thought, with plans like this pushing that problem even further. As well as this, with EVs not being as eco-friendly as promised, the question still remains if pushing electric vehicles is actually the right way forward or not.

When will this be introduced?
While there is not an official date for this system yet, the changes would align with the Government’s scheduled ban on sales of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 – along with many other plans to help with the net zero goals for 2050.
