The RAC has warned that deteriorating road markings could be putting drivers at risk, after new research revealed the scale of the problem across local roads.

A survey conducted for the RAC’s Driver Opinion Panel, which gathered responses from 1,693 motorists, found that more than one in five drivers (21%) say most road markings in their local area have faded away. A further 71% reported that at least some markings have significantly deteriorated.

Drivers also believe the issue has worsened in recent years. Nearly three-quarters of respondents (72%) said faded road markings have become a bigger problem over the past five years.

Perhaps most concerningly, 92% of those surveyed said the fading markings have made driving more dangerous.

Centre Line Markings Most Affected

Among the markings most frequently reported as faded are the centre lines that separate lanes of traffic — widely regarded as some of the most critical markings for road safety.

Half of drivers surveyed (50%) said these were the markings most commonly worn away, including:

• Solid single white lines
• Double white lines
• Broken white lines

These lines play a crucial role in guiding drivers, particularly on narrow or poorly lit roads, and in preventing dangerous overtaking manoeuvres.

With many motorists reporting worsening conditions, the RAC says maintaining clear and visible road markings should be a priority for highway authorities to help ensure roads remain safe for all users.
