We are being told AI will make UK roads safe such as using advanced technology to improve vehicle control, predict hazards, and manage traffic flow. This includes self-driving cars and smart traffic systems, leading to fewer accidents and deaths. Ongoing AI advancements promise a safer and more efficient transportation network.

Road conditions

AI technology using sensors and cameras in connected vehicles, along with fleet management software, could accurately spot road damage like potholes and cracks. It can also assess the condition of road assets like signs and lane markings in real time.

The AI algorithm can rate the severity of the damage, helping drivers and fleet owners avoid accidents and vehicle wear. This technology benefits cities and road authorities by enabling better maintenance planning and traffic flow. This also saves the time of local councils manually assessing road damages and being able to more quickly prioritize which areas need work done to them first.

Traffic flow

Google is trialing artificial intelligence (AI) in traffic light systems to reduce stop-and-go emissions and improve the flow of vehicles.

To help reduce these emissions, Google’s Green Light research initiative uses AI as well as driving trends from Google Maps to model traffic patterns and make recommendations for making the existing traffic light plans more efficient. Google said city engineers can implement these plans in as little as five minutes using existing infrastructure.

Early data from those cities indicate a potential for up to 30% reduction in stops and up to 10% reduction in emissions at junctions, Google said.
