Do you have a clear understanding of the actions to take when you’re driving and encounter an emergency vehicle displaying blue lights and sirens? Drivers may be uncertain about the appropriate course of action so here are some things you should know.
What should you do when there’s an emergency vehicle behind you?
When you notice an emergency vehicle, it’s important to make way for it, but you must do this in a way that’s safe and follows the law. If you run a red light, use a bus lane, or enter a yellow box junction to make room, you’re breaking the law and might face legal consequences.
If possible and if there’s enough room, it’s advisable to pull over to the side of the road and come to a safe stop. This should be accomplished without endangering other drivers or pedestrians or violating any traffic laws.
Should you stop where you are?
Coming to a complete stop on the road is typically not the most effective choice, as it can make it harder for emergency vehicles to navigate around you. Instead, aim to steer towards the road’s side and gradually reduce your speed until you stop. The only exception is when you encounter a bus lane; keep it clear for the emergency vehicle to pass through.
Are you legally required to give way
The Emergency Workers (Obstruction) Act 2006 makes it a crime to block or impede emergency service vehicles. Nonetheless, this doesn’t justify breaking traffic rules to give way. According to the Highway Code, you should “think about where the emergency vehicle needs to go and take the right steps to allow it through while following all traffic signs.”
To put it simply, you should aim to clear the path for the emergency vehicle, but not at the expense of breaking the law.
