Motorists encouraged to ‘remove an item’ from their vehicle for immediate fuel efficiency improvement
Drivers are being encouraged to ‘remove an item’ from their car to significantly boost fuel efficiency within minutes, potentially leading to improved performance and cost savings.

The vehicle insurance provider Zego has offered a straightforward tip that can help drivers enhance their vehicle’s fuel economy without significantly altering their driving habits. Given that the RAC reported petrol prices averaging 147.88p per litre in May 2024, many drivers are seeking advice to lower their vehicle’s fuel consumption.
How much does weight affect fuel economy?
Research conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of the United States reveals that drivers can reduce their fuel consumption by 10 percent simply by removing 100 lbs (45 kg) from their vehicle. Similarly, this principle extends to items attached to the car’s bodywork, such as bicycles and roof boxes, which can disrupt aerodynamics and increase the amount of power needed to counteract wind resistance.
So how do you improve fuel economy?
A spokesperson for Zego mentioned that one of the simplest methods for drivers to improve their fuel economy is by removing unnecessary weight from their vehicle. They advised: “The weight of your vehicle can adversely impact fuel consumption since the engine has to work harder. Consider clearing out unnecessary items from the boot, footwell, and seats. This could include things like sports equipment, tools, or heavy clothing.” “Consider removing anything that creates unnecessary air resistance and increases drag on your vehicle. Cars are designed to be highly aerodynamic, but unused roof boxes and bike racks can negatively impact fuel efficiency, especially at high speeds.”
