Hydrogen cars may be closer than you think

 In NEWS

Hydrogen has been introduced as an alternative solution to electric vehicles which not only are better for the environment but will also help keep combustion engines whilst producing zero emissions, and it may be coming quicker than you think.

How good is hydrogen?

Hydrogen cars keep the benefits that traditional petrol/diesel cars such as it’s quicker and more convenient to fill up, has a far longer range than Electric vehicles, can be fixed which results in a longer lifespan. And for car enthusiasts, retains the same amount of customizability as petrol/diesel engines do.

Whilst doing all of this, hydrogen cars are able to produce zero emissions with the process of the production of hydrogen also being nonharmful to the environment. Although electric vehicles also do not produce emissions, as more studies come out, more people are becoming aware that the process of digging up lithium and the production of electric vehicles can be extremely harmful to the environment.

Hydrogen cars will also have a longer life span as they can be fixed like a traditional engine. To fix an electric vehicle the battery has to be replaced which on average can cost up to £8000 if not under warranty with a lot of the original batteries ending up being dumped into a landfill, releasing harmful emissions into the atmosphere over time.

How long will we wait?

As of now, there are only 2 Hydrogen vehicles you can buy in the UK, with more models coming out in 2023. Currently, these are the Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo. There are also only 15 public hydrogen fill-up stations in the UK as of now. This may seem like an extremely low amount but when electric vehicles were first introduced it was a very similar situation. And within a few years, the electric car market has increased dramatically and there was a lot of doubt about them when they were first introduced.

One of Toyota’s oldest and most popular cars, the AE lineup, was recently showcased where the cars have been converted to run on hydrogen as a successful proof of concept that we can help to keep old cars running even if the eventual ban on petrol and diesel comes into place.
