The DVSA is cautioning drivers to park properly to avoid fines and violations of Highway Code rules, as new guidance will be released soon. Motorists are advised to adhere to the correct parking guidelines near their homes and in public areas to prevent potential penalties.

The new rules and timeframe

It states: “Rule 243 of The Highway Code outlines where you cannot stop or park. You can access it for free on GOV.UK.” The guidance specifies that drivers are prohibited from stopping or parking near school entrances, in locations that could obstruct emergency services, or on bends. However, many drivers might not be aware of other, less well-known restrictions. These include parking in front of a lowered kerb designed for wheelchair users and powered mobility vehicles, or within 10 metres (32 feet) of a junction unless it is an authorized parking space. When is this coming into place The new code is expected to be published in June 2024, with implementation taking place from October 1, 2024, while existing sites are expected to be fully compliant by late 2026.

Potential fines

The Government is implementing these fines, but it’s important to note that local authorities across England have the authority to penalize motorists for such offences. The fines can be substantial, reaching up to £70 per violation outside of London. In the capital, the penalties are even steeper, with maximum fines going up to £130 per offence. This move underscores the broader effort to enforce parking regulations more strictly and ensure compliance with the Highway Code nationwide. Local councils are increasingly utilizing these powers to manage parking behavior and enhance road safety.
