Scammers deceive learner drivers into paying for non-existent lessons.

 In NEWS

Fraudsters are creating fake social media profiles to target younger drivers, tricking them into paying hundreds of pounds for lessons and driving tests that don’t actually exist. These scammers exploit the trust of inexperienced customers, promising services that are never delivered.

What’s happening

Recently, customers have fallen victim to scams where they are misled into believing they are purchasing packages of driver training sessions and lessons. However, in reality, they are not receiving any legitimate services. These scammers are taking advantage of individuals seeking driving lessons by falsely presenting themselves as part of driving training organizations.

The pandemic led to a significant backlog of available driving test slots, which has yet to be fully resolved. As a result, a black market for driving tests has emerged, with corrupt individuals taking advantage of the situation. These individuals use platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp to advertise driving tests at inflated prices, preying on those desperate to secure a test date. This exploitation of the shortage continues to be a growing concern for learner drivers.

How to book a real test

Driving tests can be officially booked online through the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) website for a standard fee of £62. However, there are currently no regulations in place that prevent these booked tests from being resold at higher prices or reallocated by registered driving instructors. This loophole allows individuals and even some instructors to exploit the demand for test slots by reselling them at inflated prices, contributing to the ongoing issues within the system. The lack of oversight in this area has made it easier for such practices to thrive.
