The DVLA has issued a warning to drivers about the risks of driving even slightly above the speed limit.
Recent data from the DVLA has highlighted the most common driving offences in Britain, revealing a significant issue with speeding. Over a million drivers (1,196,401) have received penalty points for speeding offences in just over a year.

The statistics
| The West and East Midlands rank seventh and eighth, respectively, each with over 120,000 drivers receiving penalty points. Scotland also appears in the top ten, with drivers in the western part of the country being the most frequently penalized, totalling 36,585 offences. Overall, from January 2023 to April 2024, 67818 Welsh drivers received penalty points, 93,536 in Scotland had points added to their licensees, and more than 1.2 million (1,257,004) drivers in England were penalized with points. |
The ongoing issue
| David Kottaun, Operations Manager at Scrap Car Comparison, remarks, “Examining this unique data to see how we’re violating road laws has revealed some intriguing trends. As is evident from the numerous speed cameras and vans seen on the roads, speeding remains a persistent issue. “While it might not seem significant at the time, even just a few miles per hour over the speed limit can have devastating consequences in the event of a collision, especially by extending stopping distances in bad weather, which significantly increases the risk of an accident. It’s also surprising to find driving with a defective tyre among the top ten offences, as this is easily preventable. We can all take a moment before driving to check that our tyres are in good condition and have adequate tread depth. There’s really no excuse for this negligence, and the consequences could be far worse than the cost of a replacement tyre. “Laws exist for a reason, and when it comes to driving, adhering to them ensures a safer experience on the roads, reducing the likelihood of ending up in a crash or having your car scrapped.” |
