How and When to Apply for a Provisional Driving Licence?

If you’re eager to get behind the wheel and start learning to drive, the first step is applying for your provisional driving licence. Here’s a quick guide to help you know when you can apply and how to do it.

When Can You Apply?

  • From 16 years and 9 months old.
  • You can start driving a car at 17 (or 16 if you get the enhanced rate of PIP).

How to Apply

Online (recommended):

  • Apply at GOV.UK
  • Cost – £34
  • Arrives in about 2 weeks

By Post:

  • Get a D1 form from the Post Office
  • Costs £43
  • Takes up to 3 weeks

What You’ll Need

  • UK passport or valid ID
  • National Insurance number
  • Address history (last 3 years)

Once it arrives, you’re all set to start lessons and book your theory test.
