Should e-scooters be legal?
As we head towards an eco-friendly future, forms of transportation that don’t use gases such as electric scooters/bikes should be looked at positively. However major safety concerns still limit these devices from being road-legal.
The positives
Electric scooters have a bunch of good things going for them. They’re great for the environment because they don’t produce any harmful emissions. They’re small and easy to get around on, which helps ease traffic and noise in busy areas. Riding them also gives you a bit of exercise, which is a plus for your health.
Plus, they take up way less parking space compared to cars or bikes. Sharing programs make them accessible to more people, offering a budget-friendly way to get around. So, electric scooters are a step towards cleaner, simpler, and more inclusive city transportation.
The negatives
Electric scooters have some downsides in the UK. One big concern is safety. Many people don’t wear helmets, which can be dangerous if there’s an accident. Also, there’s not enough special space for scooters such as dedicated bike/scooter lanes, so they can cause problems for pedestrians and other vehicles. Sometimes, people leave scooters lying around on sidewalks, making it hard for others to walk.
Figuring out insurance, licenses, and rules for scooters can be confusing too. And there’s also the environmental impact of making and getting rid of scooter batteries. So, while electric scooters have benefits, there are important issues that need to be sorted out for them to work well in the UK.
