On the 14th November Crystal Owen was interviewed on the BBC Breakfast program https://fb.watch/vT3rUqpDy4, after meeting with Louise Haigh MP regarding the petitioning for Graduated Driving Lessons/Licenses, following the death of her son Harvey (one of many under 19’s who are killed/involved in road accidents)

Her campaign/peition requires

• 6-month minimum driving lessons with a driving instructor before taking a driving test
• First 6-month 17-19 drivers would not be able to carry pear passengers under the age of 25 unless special circumstances.

Her petition would readily work with the DVSA Ready To Pass campaign, which at this time is not credible, due to the way the DVSA allows driving test bookings on their website.

What is it all about:

The push for Graduate Driving Licences (GDL) in the UK has gained significant momentum, with MPs from across Cumbria and other political figures backing the proposal. The scheme, which aims to implement stricter driving rules for young drivers, is being advocated in response to the tragic loss of life in crashes involving newly qualified motorists. The call for GDL has intensified following recent statistics showing that 290 people were killed in crashes involving young drivers last year, with thousands more seriously injured. The movement has received backing from Labour Police and Crime Commissioner David Allen and several MPs, while critics argue that the scheme might limit young people’s freedom. However, proponents stress that the goal is not punishment, but saving lives by ensuring young drivers gain more experience before taking on the full responsibilities of driving.

What is being proposed The GDL would introduce several restrictions for drivers under 21, including a ban on carrying passengers of the same age group for the first six months after passing their driving test. This is aimed at reducing the high risk of crashes, particularly those involving young drivers with peers in the car. In addition, vehicles driven by new drivers would carry “G” plates for the first six months, and drivers would face harsher penalties for offenses such as failing to wear seatbelts.

Support for the campaign is rising: Supporters of the initiative, including MPs Markus Campbell-Savours, Josh MacAlister, and others, argue that the introduction of GDL could significantly reduce road incidents, with data from countries that have implemented similar systems showing a reduction in serious accidents by up to 40%. The initiative is endorsed by organizations like the AA, which points out that these measures could help mitigate the risks associated with young, inexperienced drivers and reduce high insurance premiums.
