Southend Council cameras will be used to catch parents violating traffic restrictions.
Senior councillors informed a Southend Council Committee on Monday that ten CCTV cameras for monitoring traffic violations near schools and junctions across the city could be approved as early as December.
What are these cameras for?
The cameras can cost between £15,000 and £25,000 to install or up to £700 per month for operation and maintenance.
They are typically placed at yellow box junctions and other problematic intersections, but the council also plans to use them to enforce traffic restrictions on school streets during drop-off and pick-up times.
This would enable the council to enforce traffic violations remotely at problem areas, including Greenways Primary School and Bournes Green Junior School.
How effective will they be?
Kevin Buck, Conservative councillor for Prittlewell ward, spoke at the committee, mentioning that the previous administration had applied for the cameras and inquired about the scheme’s progress.
He stated, “These would enable fines similar to those issued in London. They provide various methods of mobile enforcement through traffic cameras, eliminating the need for personnel on the ground.”
Daniel Cowan, the Labour leader of the council, confirmed that the scheme is progressing as planned.
He stated, “The process is now underway, and we expect to receive our orders from the Department for Transport in December, which means enforcement should be able to start soon.
“Every school faces issues, and each member can likely identify at least one, if not more, schools in their ward where parking is a significant problem.
“While the introduction of moving traffic enforcement cameras will be beneficial, the most impactful change will come from encouraging people to leave their cars and walk their children to school, promoting active travel.”

Where will these cameras be located?
The cameras will be installed at yellow box junctions on Fairfax Drive at its intersection with Prittlewell Chase, on London Road at the Nelson Road junction, on the A13 at the Elm Road junction, and at the A127 Bell interchange where it meets Rochford Road.
They will also be positioned at no right turn locations, such as Warrior Square at the junction with Chichester Road, and the no left turn at A127 Prince Avenue where it meets A1158 Prince Avenue.
